Acres of newsprint have been spent eulogising the late Duke, but this piece by Peter Hitchens is especially good.
“I often think the Duke of Edinburgh was a sort of ideal Briton, the personal distillation of those old, forgotten virtues. And because he learned these things as a foreigner and as an outsider, he appreciated them and treasured them, as the rest of us no longer do.
The foolishly named ‘gaffes’ were mainly things every sane person thinks, and only sound wrong when they are deliberately stripped of the humour and self-mockery with which they were delivered. The occasional grumpy complaints were those permitted to a man who had to spend all his life more or less silenced on matters of public affairs, of which he knew much but could not really speak. The understated but obvious contempt for trivial people and silly complaints about minor problems was normal among those who have seen the face of battle and done hard service in a world where duty is the beginning and the end of every day, not an occasional extra.” ... What Prince Philip exemplified for me was an honourable sense of duty, devotion and selfless service to others.
For a man who used to joke "Constitutionally, I don't exist", he went on to be patron, chancellor, benefactor or champion of literally hundreds of charities, causes or Universities. Generations of young people have grown up inspired to better themselves and serve others under the banner of the world-wide Duke of Edinburgh Award program, including an astonishing 775,000 Australians.
As a husband and support to Her Majesty the Queen, but also as a father, environmentalist, war veteran, and public figure, regardless of your political views, I hope you will agree we are enormously diminished by his passing.
The Queen and her consort were a package deal, he her "liege man of life and limb", and obviously still in love into their advancing age. I feel for Her Majesty at a human level.
